"Australia's ever-growing caffeine habit could be doing more damage than we think, with environmentalists warning disposable coffee cups are fast on their way to becoming a major pollution hazard." (abc.net.au).
Disposable coffee cups are made of paper and a thin layer of plastic. Currently, we do not have the technology in Australia to separate those two for recycling purposes, thus, it is estimated, 3 billion disposable coffee cups end up in landfill each year in Australia. This in turn releases methane and CO2 gases into the environment polluting our the air we breathe, along with much of this plastic waste ending up as micro-plastics in our oceans, which is detrimental to marine life.
"The ocean is turning into a plastic soup and, given the ocean is the source of all life on this planet, we are going to end up choking." (abc.net.au).
Australia needs to push for a ban on disposable cups. We need to become more responsible for our own actions and choose the sustainable option. We need to do this not only for ourselves, but for our children, grandchildren and all future generations. We need to educate our kids, our schools through educational programs and campaigns.
